Creating new woodland at Maesteg Golf Club

A fine example of public-private sector partnership benefiting from grant funding through the Better Woodlands for Wales initiative

Maesteg Golf Club has formed an exciting new partnership with ‘Carbon Earth’, a leading carbon offsetting organisation. This partnership will create new woodland through the planting of over 4,000 trees on the land owned by the golf club. The new woodland will deliver many environmental benefits, most notably carbon capture and improved bio diversity on the course.

Maesteg is already established as one of the leading environmentally friendly golf clubs in the UK. In 2008 MGC was ranked among top 20 golf clubs in the highly respected UK wide BIGGA environmental awards. This woodland project was part of their 2008 award submission. 18 months of meticulous planning was needed to gain the necessary approvals from bodies such as the Forestry Commission, The Environment Agency and The Countryside Council for Wales. This process is now complete and the club is celebrating by welcoming DEFRA Minister, and local MP, Huw Irranca-Davies to a ceremonial tree planting at 10am on November 14th. There will be a keynote speech from the Minister and various other presentations.

The woodlands strategy for Wales has a vision for the next 50 years:

"Wales will be known for high-quality woodlands that enhance the landscape, are appropriate to local conditions and have a diverse mixture of species and habitats that will provide real social and community benefits, support thriving woodland-based industries and contribute to a better quality environment throughout Wales"

This is an open meeting and all members & visitors are guaranteed a warm welcome. Refreshments will be provided.
